The Daily Green has taken US Senator James M Inhofe (R-OK) to task for some of the more absurd claims he likes to make, in support of industry. Unfettered pollution is much cheaper (read as more “economically viable”) for the people who make contributions to Mr Inhofe’s campaign war chest. Naturally, in response, the senator places the interest of his corporate donors above the interest of his constituents in not suffering athsma today, and catastrophic droughts, fires, and storms of the type New Orleans and Southern California have seen.
Some of Mr Inhofe’s more absurd claims about global climate change include
[the] greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.
Over 400 prominent scientists from more than two dozen countries recently voiced significant objections to major aspects of the so-called ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming.
Forget that this defies common sense (cause and effect = burning fossil fuels and polluting the atmosphere as cause + climate change as result) and ponder for a moment that it defies the generally understood meaning of the word consensus. When hundreds of thousands of scientists reach agreement, 413 (or less) weathermen is not sizable opposition. As a fraction of the whole, the Denier Position (that global climate change isn’t happening, or is happening for reasons completely unrelated to human development) has less support than Ralph Nader for president in 2008.
It’s true, though, that the list Mr Inhofe refers to (available in its entirety here) has 413 names, which is indeed “over 400”. This is where the accuracy of his claims ends, however. 84 people have accepted money from the fossil fuel industry, and have a vested interest in the “economic viability” of pollution. 49 are retired, and simply do not have access to the most up to date, cutting edge information on this quickly changing subject. 44 are weathermen on television. 20 are economists. 70 are on the list for reasons unknown. A choice quote from The Daily Green: “Several supposed skeptics have publicly stated that they are very concerned about global warming, and support efforts to address it. One claims he was duped into signing the list and regrets it.”
