End of an Era, Thank God

America survived eight years of Bush, though at great injury. Obama will have to channel FDR to right our ailing economy. The larger economy has just experienced what California went through when GWB set Enron loose on us.

Our incomming attorney general asserts that torture is illegal – what a refreshing change!

The world presumes that illegal spying on American citizens will end immediately, as Gitmo is shut down, and that troops will come home from Iraq in the none too distant future. Tupac Shakur said “only time reveals,” and we’ll see how these things play out.

After the dark ages of George Bush Junior, America has nowhere to go but up.

End of the Dark Ages

We won! And, by we, I mean the American people, and the people of the world. America has said no to torture, disastrous economic policy, cronyism (“Heck of a job Brownie“), wars of choice, and fear tactics.

The biggest landslide of a generation is historic in many ways, least of which might be Obama’s skin. Swing states have swung. Red is vanishing from the map. Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada gave a collective shout of “enough!” Missouri may yet tip – at this writing, it’s too close to call. Results are similar in Congressional and gubernatorial races.

Americans have handed down a mandate – stop this Reign of Error!

Hope is spreading over the world like a sunrise.

NICOLAS SARKOZY, FRENCH PRESIDENT

“With the world in turmoil and doubt, the American people, faithful to the values that have always defined America’s identity, have expressed with force their faith in progress and the future.

“At a time when we must face huge challenges together, your election has raised enormous hope in France, in Europe and beyond. France and Europe … will find a new energy to work with America to persevere peace and world prosperity.”

STEPHEN HARPER, CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER

“I look forward to meeting with the President-elect so that we can continue to strengthen the special bond that exists between Canada and the United States.

“In the weeks and months ahead Canadian officials and diplomats will be working closely with members of President-elect Obama’s transition team. Ministers in our government look forward to building a strong working relationship with their counterparts in a new Obama cabinet.”

HELEN CLARK, NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER

“The New Zealand Government very much looks forward to working with the new Obama administration.

“Senator Obama will be taking office at a critical juncture. There are many pressing challenges facing the international community, including the global financial crisis and global warming. We look forward to working closely with President-elect Obama and his team to address these challenges.”

PAKISTANI EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON

“President (Asif Ali) Zardari expressed the hope that Pakistan-U.S. relations will be enhanced under the new American leadership that received a popular mandate in Tuesday’s poll.”

Woman Shoots Herself While Trying To Kill Mice

POTTER VALLEY (AP) ― A Mendocino County woman who was trying to kill mice in her trailer with a gun ended up shooting herself and another person.

The mice escaped the shooting unharmed.

Stupid people shouldn’t have guns. Or hospital maybe access?

I’ll bet you anything she votes Republican, and probably doesn’t think John McCain is conservative enough.

Stewie Griffin, of Family Guy fame, commented “The same thing happened to me when I used some C4 to kill a bee once.”

I got the meanest dog around
with teeth like Margret Thatcher
and a face like Gordon Brown.

Woke up this morning
with a warrantless wiretap on my phone
mortgage is due
and I just can’t get a loan.

I’ve been trying to think of the rest for some time now, but I seem unable to.  This has sat in my drafts bin long enough.

David Vitter Continues Humiliating Christians

David Vitter is the right wing extremist senator from Louisiana, obviously a Republican. He earned national fame when his was found in the “DC Madame’s” client book. Mr Vitter loves the prostitutes every bit as much as Elliot Spitzer – the difference is that, like Larry Craig, Vitter lacks the decency to step down.

Vitter proposed and then withdrew an earmark (because conservatives love those) to integrate church and state

Speaking on the Senate floor on October 17, 2007, Senator David Vitter (R-Louisiana) withdrew a controversial $100,000 earmark that he previously added to the appropriations bill for the departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education. The earmark was to the Louisiana Family Forum, a religious right group with a long history of promoting creationism and attacking evolution education in the state, including backing a “strengths and weaknesses” policy in Ouachita Parish.

Look, I’m a Christian myself. I’m also an American. We’re losing our competitive edge in the world. Let the schools teach Earthly reality, and let the churches teach about the next world.

Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster located at http://www.venganza.org is the world’s newest (joke) religion and growing faster than Mormonism. Pastafarianism (get it?) was set up in response to Intelligent Design, which is a lot of things to a lot of people – all of them negative.

ID is an attack on science, first and foremost. This is intellectual dishonesty, and short sighted policy being instigated at the grass roots by people who enjoy the benefits of living in a scientifically advanced society. From medical treatments to cars with internal combustion engines to the internet and TV, and even just indoor lights and plumbing, nobody wants scientific research to end.

So what is the American Christian Taliban doing? Evolution seems to be the mechanism God chose to bring about life on EarthFSM – as taught in the Book of Genisis thousands of years ago. The fact that we’ve only learned this through science 150 years ago proves the Divinity of the Bible to me. But snake handler Baptists in the southeast think God used a different means of making us. It’s ok to disagree on theological questions like what parts of the ancient texts should be taken literally and which are poetic, but it’s not ok to hijack education to teach your own idea of God’s will.

And the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a response to this extremism. It fights fire with fire, and with silliness. Here’s what people are saying about it

“As a scientist, I’d like to say that the currently accepted scientific theory is evolution. But, some competing ideas have been proposed, such as ID and FSMism, and discussion to include one should include the other, as these ideas are equally valid.“
– Mark Zurbuchen, Ph.D.

Notice the FSM is a symptom, not a cause in this. Ignorant pseudo Christians who project their own insecurity onto others are the cause of this backlash we’re seeing. Shocking as it may sound, our best move is to follow Jesus’s teachings and treat others with the respect we deserve from society. Christianity has lost too much public respect and opened itself to ridicule by the likes of FSM, because we stopped showing society any measure of respect. More important than being laughed at is that some (the loudest) of us have stopped behaving as Christians.

We're making a bad impression

(It seems like animal rights is about sexuality and only of interest to emotional women, tho? That’s not even true but it’s what’s being portrayed.)
